Brian Gregan misses out on medal at World University Games

Brian Gregan fell disappointingly short of the gold medal he so strongly targeted at the World University Games in Kazan, finishing fifth in the 400 metres final in what proved to be an ultra competitive race.

The DCU student was the fastest qualifier for the final, but lacked his usual power coming into the homestretch, Russia?s Vladimir Krasnov finishing fastest of the lot in lane eight to claim the home victory in a season best of 45.49 seconds.

That left Krasnov just .01 ahead of Brazil?s Adreson Henriques, yet Gregan was never even in a medal winning position, taking fifth in 45.83 ? down on his season best of 45.53, and in fact equalling his fifth place finish of two years ago. Earlier, Jessie Barr finished sixth in the final of the 400m hurdles, clocking 57.65, also someway outside her best, as the gold medal went to Anna Titimets of Ukraine in an excellent 54.64.

NBA free agency news and rumors: Andrew Bynum to meet with Hawks; Cavs wait for decision

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers should know soon if they have added two-time NBA champion Andrew Bynum to their roster.

Before Bynum makes his decision, he will travel to Atlanta to meet with the Hawks.

His decision could be made Tuesday later in the day, according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com.

But Mary Schmitt Boyer of The Plain Dealer tweets the Dallas Mavericks still expect to meet with Bynum tomorrow.

Bynum met with the Cavaliers Monday in Cleveland.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting the Cavaliers offered the free-agent center a two-year, $24 million-plus, incentive-based contract. He also mentions the Cavaliers are already reaching out to other free-agents in case Bynum decides to go elsewhere.
Cleveland wants a team option on a second contract year to protect it against losing Bynum to 2014 free agency should his damaged knees heal enough to allow him to make a resurgence this season. The incentives of a possible Bynum contract could include minimal hurdles of completing training camp and reaching minutes and games-played plateaus in the regular season, league sources said. Bynum's camp has been shopping for one-year, high-money deals that would allow him to hit the market again next year, sources said. For the Cavaliers, the possibility of a Bynum reclamation project taking shape in Cleveland, coupled with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, could be the cornerstones of a recruiting pitch to bring back LeBron James in the summer of 2014."
Bynum last played during the 2011-12 season in Los Angeles with the Lakers, averaging 18.7 points per game and grabbing 11.8 rebounds. He sat out last season with the Philadelphia 76ers due to persistent knee trouble. The Cavaliers are already reaching out to other free-agents in case Bynum decides to go elsewhere. Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports writes:
Bynum, 25, left Cleveland to travel to Atlanta to meet with Hawks officials, and Cleveland has begun to engage free agents Andrei Kirilenko and Elton Brand on possible one-year deals that would preclude the Cavaliers from the ability to sign Bynum, league sources said.
Randy Foye to Nuggets in sign-and-trade deal The Nuggets have agreed to separate sign-and-trade deals that will land them guard Randy Foye from the Utah Jazz and send Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors, a person familiar with the decision said Monday. The Associated Press reports:
The Warriors had planned to sign Iguodala to a four-year, $48 million deal as a free agent last week. Instead, the restructured deal will give Golden State more salary cap flexibility, deliver Denver a $9 million trade exception and help Utah build for the future with expiring contracts and draft picks.

Singer Randy Travis remains in critical condition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Country singer Randy Travis remained in critical condition Tuesday in a Texas hospital after doctors inserted a device to stabilize his weakened heart.

Travis' publicist, Kirt Webster, said in a news release Tuesday that the singer underwent the procedure after checking into the hospital Sunday with viral cardiomyopathy (kahr-dee-oh-my-OP-uh-thee), a heart condition caused by a virus.

Webster said the left ventricular assist device was used to stabilize Travis's heart prior to a hospital transfer to Dallas. Travis lives about 60 miles from Dallas in Tioga.

The device used to help Travis is a small pump inserted with a catheter that assists the heart to pump blood.

Travis, 54, became ill after a virus infected his heart muscle, causing it to become weakened and enlarged so that it could not pump properly. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure.

No other details about the Grammy award-winning singer's condition were available Tuesday afternoon.

Several country stars conveyed their best wishes for Travis' recovery.

"Sending healing strength and love to you this morning @randytravis," Keith Urban said in a message to Travis on Twitter.

And Carrie Underwood, who Travis won a Grammy Award with in 2010, wrote: "Thinking about my friend, @randytravis, tonight. Hope he gets better soon..."

Long a popular figure in country music, the North Carolina-born singer has been trying to put his life back together after a series of embarrassing public incidents involving alcohol. Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following an arrest last year and received two years probation and a $2,000 fine. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

The multiple Grammy Award-winning singer rode his alternately mellow and majestic voice to stardom in the 1980s and '90s with hits like "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses."

How Abortion Regulation is Succeeding in 4 States After Gosnell

Republican state legislatures are succeeding in restricting abortion in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Texas as protests rage across the country.?It turns out that all they needed was the high-profile and gruesome?Kermit Gosnell murder trial?to energize conservatives lawmakers.?Despite protests against the restrictive bills, Democrats have only been successful in stalling the bills, not stopping them.?

RELATED: Why Are We Punishing Women for Kermit Gosnell's Crimes?

After the Republican wave election in 2010, several states, like South Dakota, Kansas,?pushed for new abortion rules. Kansas dropped to a single abortion clinic in February 2011, while South Dakota debated but then abandoned a bill that would have redefined justifiable homicide to allow using lethal force to protect a fetus. In November 2011, Mississippi voters rejected a state constitutional amendment to declare a fertilized egg a person. This time, the energizing force was not an election, but a Pennsylvania murder trial. Texas Gov. Rick Perry said earlier this month, "We saw this Gosnell clinic in Philadelphia and the horrors that went on there, sticking the scissors in the backs, baby?s backs to end their lives. We saw that same type of action in a clinic in Houston Texas...?I think you?re seeing the awakening of a sleeping giant in this country to protect babies."?Here's how the abortion bills are progressing in four states:

North Carolina

Sixty-four abortion-rights activists?were arrested?Monday evening during the continuing "Moral Monday" protests in North Carolina's capitol. The protests, which have addressed topics ranging from voting rights to school vouchers, are currently in their tenth week. Monday's drew over 2,000 people to Raleigh and centered on recent abortion restrictions passed by the state Senate.

RELATED: Rick Perry Revives Abortion Bill, Sets Up a Bigger Showdown with Wendy Davis

The Senate snuck these restrictions into a bill otherwise concerned with?banning Sharia law?on July 3.?The amendments?would require?increased regulation of abortion clinics that would likely cause many to close. They would also place restrictions on doctors administering the abortion pill and prevent some insurance plans from covering abortion services. At the time, Republican Gov. Pat McCrory criticized the Senate's process, claiming, "regardless of what party is in charge or what important issue is being discussed, the process must be appropriate and thorough."

RELATED: Political Insiders Disappointed by Your Lack of Interest in Ohio's Union Vote

Republican State Sen. Warren Daniel?argued?in favor of the amendments: "We?re not here today taking away the rights of women. We?re taking away the rights of an industry to have substandard conditions."?The House committee debated the bill on Tuesday. It seems McCrory is at a loss for how to talk about the bill ? it's clear that he doesn't agree with it, but he doesn't want to alienate social conservatives. In a press conference at the executive mansion on Monday, he told reporters,

"There's a fine line between safety measures and restrictions, but those two lines should not be confused, and I'm very concerned about the responsibility to ensure the health of women is protected."

McCrory hasn't explicitly stated whether or not he'd sign the bill if it landed on his desk. One of the protesters arrested last night, Tanya Glover, 34, told?Reuters, "this state has gone to hell and it's hurting my family."

Wisconsin

U.S. District Judge William Conley placed a temporary restraining order on abortion legislation on Monday. The bill, which was signed into law by Republican Gov. Scott Walker on Friday, requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles. It also requires that women seeking abortions undergo an ultrasound, but that part isn't being contested.?

Attorneys argued that if the law were to stand, many women would have to cancel existing appointments at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Appleton and the Affiliated Medical Clinic in Milwaukee this week. Conley noted,

There is a troubling lack of justification for the hospital admitting privileges requirement . . .?Moreover, the record to date strongly supports a finding that no medical purpose is served by this requirement.

The block will remain in place until July 17, pending a fuller hearing.?Last week, a small number of abortion-rights activists protested the bill outside Walker's house in Wauwatosa.

Ohio

Republican Gov. John Kasich signed multiple abortion restrictions into law last week under a $62 billion budget bill. Abortion-rights activists hoped Kasich would exercise his line-item veto power to nix some of the amendments, but he left all of them intact. The restrictions are possibly the most aggressive of all the states' current proposed or passed legislation. The budget bill includes:

  • A requirement that doctors test for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion. The doctor must then inform the woman seeking the abortion of the heartbeat and give her the odds that she could carry her child to term should she decide not to go through with the procedure. If doctors fail to do this, they could face 6-18 months in jail, depending on the number of violations.
  • A prohibition against public hospitals and the doctors affiliated with them from agreeing to accept patients from abortion clinics in case of emergency. Clinics need these agreements to stay open.
  • A funding priority list that puts Planned Parenthood last among various state and local agencies and health centers.

Though Ohio passed some of the toughest new abortion restrictions, some thought they didn't go far enough. Republican state Rep. Lynn Wachtmann said, "It's unfortunate that pro-life senators couldn't get more. I look at these issues in the budget as good stuff to save babies."?Wachtmann was in favor of a stricter amendment regarding fetal heartbeats. After the House and Senate approved the budget bill, pro-choicers rallied at the statehouse in protest. State Sen. Nina Turner noted, "Texas lit a fuse."

Texas?

After weeks of rallying on both sides of the aisle, the Texas House will vote on Tuesday?on HB2, which will ban abortions after 20 weeks, and like those in the other states considering legislation, regulate abortion clinics to the point that many will have to close. Should the House and Senate approve the bills this week, Gov. Rick Perry could sign them into law as soon as Friday.?

Pro-choicers are still protesting the legislation, but given the Republican majority in the Texas legislature, the bills are expected to pass.

It appears some members of the legislature are ready for protesters to leave the capitol. NBC 5 reporter Omar Villafranca tweeted from the House that some could be overheard saying, "another day in paradise."

Ladera Golf Course repairs blamed on drought

Posted at: 07/08/2013 7:59 AM
By: Nikki Ibarra, KOB Eyewitness News 4

The drought is to blame for the partial closure of a west side golf course.

Starting Monday, the first nine holes of the Ladera Golf Course will be closed for repairs. Golfers told KOB Eyewitness News 4 the turf has gotten pretty bad because of the three-year drought.

But that's not the only issue. Management said nearby construction work is also to blame.

KOB spoke to golfers as soon as the announcement of the partial closure was made.

"It needs repairs. We're playing on a lot of dirt there so we come with the ball a lot but it, it's getting there,? golfer Anthony Gutierrez said.

Management also said they will be reseeding the lawn, planting drought resistance plants and replacing trees damaged by the drought.

The first nine holes will re-open on Oct. 31.

NextStories Makes it Easy to Find the Great Articles Online

For discovering new web content, everyone knows StumbleUpon. But NextStories is a cool alternative that presents pages and articles in a Pinterest-like interface, giving you more control over what you see next.

While StumbleUpon drives you from one page to the next, NextStories is all about giving you options. You don't even have to sign up for the service; just drag a bookmarklet into your bookmarks bar, and tap it whenever you're on a site that you like. A grid of related articles that you might enjoy will immediately overlay on top of the page, and clicking one takes you straight there. There's no menubar overlay, and no special sharing features or ratings; NextStories is strictly about getting you to a new article.

This refreshing minimalism does come at the expense of customizability. NextStories won't learn your habits and interests over time like StumbleUpon, but for just killing a few minutes on the internet, I prefer NextStories' simpler approach.

Ala. education officials probe college readiness

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? Alabama education officials say more than a third of college freshman from the state needed remedial course work last fall.

Deputy Superintendent of Education, Sherrill Parris, told The Times Daily of Florence (http://bit.ly/12b6L0F) the amount of students who graduated high school and needed remedial course work factored into Plan 2020 ? a statewide initiative to improve education over the next seven years.

Parris and executive director of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, Gregory Fitch, said standards requiring students to enroll in remedial courses varies between the state's public colleges and universities.

The Department of Education would like to establish a standardized method to determine remediation needs, Parris said.

"That will give high school folks an idea," she said. "If a student was making A's, and then had to take remedial classes, obviously their high school course work isn't at the level it needs to be."

Superintendent of Decatur Schools, Ed Nichols, said he'd like to be able to tell prospective college students what each school considers remedial.

"We want to address this issue, but to do it we need to know what each college wants and how they are identifying folks," he said.

Florence Schools Superintendent, Janet Womack, said students passing the Alabama High School Graduation exam to get their diplomas may contribute to a false sense of accomplishment. Womack says students passing the exam doesn't necessarily mean they're ready for college-level courses.

Mary Scott Hunter, a state Board of Education member from northern Alabama, said the state has no clearly defined benchmarks to measure college readiness.

"We should not be passing students, we should not have social promotion, and students should be meeting every milestone and should be matriculating only after they meet the standards," she said.

Officials say the need for remedial courses and some students having to retake the same remedial courses multiple times could jeopardize federal financial aid options with students paying for the courses but not earning college credit for them.

McCain urges US to end military aid to Egypt as 30 die in clashes

Hassan Ammar / AP

Supporters and opponents of Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi clash on the 6 October bridge, near Maspero, Cairo, Friday.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

The United States should stop sending military aid to Egypt following the overthrow of its democratically elected president by the military, Senator John McCain said, as overnight street battles left at least 30 dead across the divided country.

Egypt?s military insists that ousting Islamist Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday was the will of the people as expressed by mass demonstrations calling for him to go.

Secretary of State John Kerry approved $1.3 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Egypt ? the second largest recipient of such help after Israel ? only two months ago.

However, U.S. law prohibits financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.

For hours, there was no security in sight as the fighting ensued. Guns, stones and even fireworks were used as weapons but Morsi's supporters were driven back by the anti-Morsi demonstrators, and the military. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Cairo's emblematic Tahrir Square and nearby approaches to the River Nile ? which were the focus of anti-Morsi demonstrations -- were largely empty early Saturday but were strewn with debris.

Thousands of Morsi's Islamist supporters marched to the area Friday demanding his reinstatement but ended up fleeing under a hail of stones, fireworks and sometimes gunfire.

Heath Ministry official Khaled el-Khatib told The Associated Press that 30 people were killed and some 210 wounded in violence across the country.

Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood movement said the country had returned to the days of military rule under former President Hosni Mubarak. The Muslim Brotherhood was a banned organization for much of his rule.

"It's the old police state of Mubarak with every ingredient and nightmare that it had before the January 25 revolution. It's as if we hit the reset button,? Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad told Reuters.

The Brotherhood?s website said some 3 million people had taken part in pro-Morsi demonstrations.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

It issued four demands late Friday: Morsi?s return to office; the cancellation of all ?unconstitutional coup-related decisions, decrees and actions announced by the military council with which it usurped power;? the reinstatement of the constitution; and for officials to be held accountable for the killing of protesters and other ?oppressive tactics.?

The U.S. has avoided calling Morsi?s ouster a coup, which would mean aid would have to be suspended.

But, speaking in Prescott, Arizona, McCain said, ?I say that with great reluctance, but the United States of America I think must learn the lessons of history and that is: We cannot stand by without acting in cases where freely elected governments are unseated by the military arm of those nations.?

He said he believed U.S. aid had to be suspended, and called on the Egyptian military to set a timetable for elections and a new constitution.

?Then we should evaluate whether to continue the aid or not,? he said. ?I am aware that by suspending aid to the Egyptian military, which is the only stable institution in Egypt, we are risking further problems in the Sinai, and in other areas of cooperation with the Egyptian military.?

State-owned newspapers said the army-backed authorities would announce the appointment of a prime minister on Saturday to run the country during a transition period, Reuters reported. Former U.N. nuclear agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei, 71, a leading liberal politician, was seen as the most likely candidate to lead an administration focused on reviving a shattered economy and restoring civil peace and security.?

The U.S. State Department condemned the violence Friday.

Thousands of people marched in support of ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, who is being held at an army barracks near the airport. The clashes continued in Cairo, Alexandria and Sinai where the army was on high alert. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

?We call on all Egyptian leaders to condemn the use of force and to prevent further violence among their supporters,? spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

?The voices of all who are protesting peacefully must be heard - including those who welcomed the events of earlier this week and those who supported President Morsy,? she added. ?The Egyptian people must come together to resolve their differences peacefully, without recourse to violence or the use of force."

The chaotic scenes that played out in the capital, mostly on a bridge leading to Tahrir, ended overnight only after the army rushed in with armored vehicles to separate the warring groups. Some of Morsi's opponents jumped on at least one vehicle to try to show that the military was on their side.

Across the country, clashes erupted as Morsi supporters tried to storm local government buildings or military facilities, battling police or Morsi opponents.

Islamists descended on anti-Morsi rally, opening fire with guns in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria, where at least 12 people were killed, mostly Morsi opponents, emergency services official Amr Salama said.

One man was stabbed and thrown from the roof of a building by Morsi supporters after he raised an Egyptian flag and shouted insults against the ousted president, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.

Friday's turmoil began in the afternoon when army troops opened fire as hundreds of his supporters marched on the Republican Guard building in Cairo. That site is where Morsi was staying when he was toppled before being taken into military custody at an undisclosed location.

The crowd approached a barbed wire barrier where troops were standing guard. When one person hung a sign of Morsi on the barrier, soldiers tore it down and told the crowd to stay back. A protester put up a second sign, and the soldiers opened fire, according to an AP photographer.

The Health Ministry said a total of four were killed at the site, though it was not known how all died.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

China Biotech In Review: Glaxo Officials In China Detained For 'Economic Crimes'

Government and Regulatory

GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) officials in three China cities - Shanghai, Beijing and Changsha - were detained by authorities in what appears to be a bribery scandal (see story). Officials would say only that they were investigating economic crimes. Apparently, a whistleblower from inside the company alleged that GSK bribed doctors and hospital officials to prescribe the company's products. Officials closed GSK's Shanghai office for one day, and several people were "seized," including a high-ranking foreign-born senior finance executive. No charges have been filed, and few details are known for certain.

China's NDRC announced it is investigating whether 60 drugmakers have inflated their prices (see story). The agency is looking at the records of domestic pharmas and global companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis (NYSE: NVS), Baxter (NYSE: BAX), Merck (NYSE: MRK) and Boehringer Ingelheim. The scrutiny seems to be focused on drugs included on China's Essential Drug List, which was expanded this year to 520 products from 307. Products from notable China drugmakers such as Sinopharm and Hengrui Medicines are also part of the investigation.

Deals and Financings

Shanghai RAAS Blood Products (SHE: 002252) will issue a total of 93,652,444 shares, at a nominal price of RMB 19.22 per share, to acquire a 100% stake in Banghe Pharma. The shares value Banghe at 1.8 billion RMB ($290 million). Both companies make biologic plasma-derived products. In addition, RAAS will sell 26 million shares to RAAS China Limited, also at 19.22 RMB per share, to raise 500 million RMB ($80 million). The company will invest the proceeds into developing Banghe's business.

Shanghai Pharma (SHA: 601607; HK: 2607) paid 615 million RMB ($100 million) to purchase a 79% stake in Big Global Limited. Big Global is owned by Dong Ying (Jiangsu) Pharmaceuticals Co. The purchase gives Shanghai Pharma majority ownership of Dong Ying, which makes high-end generic drugs. Additional transactions will bring Shanghai Pharma's stake in Dong Ying up to 90%.

Pharming Group of the Netherlands announced a strategic collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry (SIPI) to develop new products based on a Pharming platform. SIPI, a Sinopharm company, also obtained exclusive China rights to Ruconest, a recombinant treatment for acute angioedema attacks in patients with hereditary angioedema. SIPI will pay Pharming $1.6 million upfront for the collaboration and $1.1 million in technology transfer milestones for the first product, Ruconest.

Neusoft Medical, a Shenyang maker of imaging equipment, will purchase an additional 25% of its JV with Royal Phillips Electronics, bringing its stake in the company to 74%. Neusoft Medical is a division of Neusoft Corporation (SHA: 600718), a China IT company. It formed the JV with Phillips in 2004 with $30 million of capital. In February of this year, Neusoft announced it would purchase 100% of the JV, a plan that obviously changed. Neusoft did not explain why the terms of the deal were altered so radically.

Acebright Holdings signed a MOU with NasVax of Israel under which it will invest $1 million in NasVax for a 10% stake in the company. NasVax is developing two novel drugs, an immunotherapy and a treatment for Alzheimer's. AceBright, whose Shanghai Acebright Pharma subsidiary produces treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases, may also participate in future NasVax offerings.

Disclosure: none.

Light-Driven Cancer Therapy Developed by Nanotechnology Startup

What's the Latest Development?

An Indiana-based technology startup is working to create new heads for computer hard drives that could improve their storage density and assist in the development of light-driven cancer therapies.?The company is developing nanostructured compounds that can concentrate light through plasmonic effects. "In the realm of data storage, for example, plasmonic structures can create a much more tightly confined beam of light that can read and write much smaller magnetic or optical bits. In medicine, gold particles just tens of nanometers across could be used to damage tumors by concentrating the energy in infrared light."

What's the Big Idea?

Light-based cancer treatment is a budding technology that, given the ability to concentrate laser light beams onto specific tumor cells, overcomes many adverse effects that result from chemotherapy treatment. "Metal nanoparticles can be injected into the bloodstream so that they accumulate in tumors. When clinicians shine the right wavelength of light on these nanoparticles from outside the body, some plasmon oscillations heat them up and damage the tumor. It is possible to control how much the nanoparticles heat up by altering their shape."?Nanospectra Biosciences?of Houston, Texas, already has treatments based on gold-coated nanoparticles in early?clinical trials.

HTC First kernel source now available from HTCDev

HTC First

Developers looking to access deeper functions of the HTC First now have some of the necessary code

As we've seen many times before, HTC has just released the kernel source code for one of its devices via its HTCDev site. This time it's the HTC First on AT&T and just like before, the eager developers out there hoping to get deeper access to this comfortably-sized device now have more tools to do so. As we note each time that kernel source code is made available, this isn't a complete set of proprietary binaries required to make a completely custom ROM, but rather just some of the underlying code for the deep tinkerers that want to bother with the device's kernel.

We won't ever look this gift horse in the mouth though, as any time a major device manufacturer continually releases kernel source it deserves a nod for following the terms of the GPL license. Enterprising hackers among us can grab a download of the 99.2MB file at the source link below.

RAGBRAI PLANNING: Months Of Work | WHOTV.com

Posted on: 5:25 pm, July 4, 2013, by Roger Riley, updated on: 05:26pm, July 4, 2013

RAGBRAI?s rolling city takes one week to cross Iowa spending each night in a different city.?? In central Iowa, four towns will be opening up their hospitality for the group.

For the towns along the way, there is much planning and a lot of volunteers to coordinate. The work takes months.

?We bid for it, we wanted it and then when we got it and we got that first book we were like ?wow! This is incredible,? says Bob Wilson of the Perry Chamber of Commerce.

ragbrai bookA book developed by RAGBRAI organizers, it gives towns like Perry an idea where to start.

Perry visitors may see the new Raccoon River Bike Trail but are not encouraged to ride it as emergency vehicles can?t get access to the trail.

However, a visit to Perry?s downtown including the Albert Paley sculpture and Hotel Patee will be on many cyclists? agenda.

In Oskaloosa, visitors will hang out at the scenic courthouse square ? Travel and Leisure Magazine designated the square the most beautiful in the Midwest.

Many city committees have been getting things ready. Hosting RAGBRAI can cost a community well over $100,000.

?it should be covered if we get sales in our beverage counters but we may not get the good beverages sales if we get rain,? says John Sullivan.

In Knoxville the community is hopeful of turning a profit to help the community.

Riders in Knoxville will get to take a lap around the Knoxville raceway which will be packed and dried out by then.

They will also cross Red Rock Lake on the mile long bridge but here too the local organizers needed to solve a problem.

?There are some grates there that has the potential to tear up tires. A local firm is going to actually specially make covers for these grate,? says ?Larissa Van Donselaar of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce.

In all it takes months of planning for a one day visit which will hopefully leave a positive impression for years.

RAGBRAI begins on July 21st in Council Bluffs.

Nokia's New Flagship (The Lumia 909?) Spotted In Leaked Images Ahead Of July 11 Event

nokiaEOS909For many of us today the 4th of July signifies a day of patriotism, fireworks, and grilled meats, but it also means that there are only seven days left until Nokia opens the doors to a New York press event that's expected to highlight the company's new flagship Windows Phone. The volume and legitimacy of pre-launch leaks surge in the days just prior to a device's unveiling, so it's little surprise that noted gadget leaker Evleaks (or Evan, if you prefer) posted a pair of authentic looking images of the phone with just days left to go.

C Spire's Galaxy S3 4.1.2 Premium Suite update begins July 3

Premium Suite

The Premium Suite features make the 4.1.2 update into something worth waiting for

Starting sometime on July 3, users with a Samsung Galaxy S3 on the C Spire network should start seeing that oh-so-wonderful OTA pop-up we all cherish. The carrier is sending out the Android 4.1.2 update, including the Premium Suite features that we've seen in other Galaxy S3 models.

While an update to Jelly Bean is great in and of its own, the Premium Suite brings a good many new features to the device. Updates for previous models have included things like smart photo tagging, reader mode, S-Beam enhancements, and the crowd favorite multi-window view.

Samsung and C Spire have also made the update available online via Kies, so if you'd prefer not to wait you can use the Samsung utility to download and install this one -- though that often comes with its own unpleasant experience.

If you're a C Spire customer with a Galaxy S3, start paying attention to your notifications in a few short hours. If and when you receive the update, be sure to sound off in the comment box and let everyone know what you think.
