Feb. 7, 2013 ? By identifying two genes required for transforming inorganic into organic mercury, which is far more toxic, scientists?have just taken a significant step toward protecting human health.
The question of how methylmercury, an organic form of mercury, is produced by natural processes in the environment has stumped scientists for decades, but a team led by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has solved the puzzle. Results of the study, published in the journal Science, provide the genetic basis for this process, known as microbial mercury methylation, and have far-reaching implications.
"Until now, we did not know how the bacteria convert mercury from natural and industrial processes into methylmercury," said ORNL's Liyuan Liang, a co-author and leader of a large Department of Energy-funded mercury research program that includes researchers from the University of Missouri-Columbia and University of Tennessee.
"This newly gained knowledge will allow scientists to study proteins responsible for the conversion process and learn what controls the activity," said Liang, adding that it may lead to ways of limiting methylmercury production in the environment.
For some 40 years scientists have known that when mercury is released into the environment certain bacteria can transform it into highly toxic methylmercury. Exactly how bacteria make this happen has eluded scientists. The challenge was to find proteins that can transfer a certain type of methyl group and to identify the genes responsible for their production.
Ultimately, by combining chemical principles and genome sequences, the team identified two genes, which they named hgcA and hgcB. Researchers experimentally deleted these genes one at a time from two strains of bacteria, which caused the resulting mutants to lose the ability to produce methylmercury. Reinserting these genes restored that capability, thus verifying the discovery.
The researchers found that this two-gene cluster is present in all known mercury-methylating bacteria, and they predicted that more than 50 other microorganisms may methylate mercury because they have a pair of similar genes.
Another key to the development was the collection of talent assembled to work on this problem.
"This discovery was made possible by our diverse team, which includes scientists with expertise in chemistry, computational biology, microbiology, neutron science, biochemistry and bacterial genetics," said Liang, who rated this paper as one of the most satisfying of her career.
Mercury is a toxin that spreads around the globe mainly through the burning of coal, industrial use and through natural processes such as volcanic eruptions. The chemical element bioaccumulates in aquatic food chains, especially in large fish. Various forms of mercury are widely found in sediments and water.
In a report just released by the United Nations Environmental Programme, Achiim Steiner, United Nations under-secretary general and executive director of UNEP, notes that "mercury remains a major global, regional and national challenge in terms of threats to human health and the environment."

Absolutely, that is what kids do. The amazing thing about what we frequently call ?play? is that it is the best way for children to learn, especially if adults support them in this!
Imagine this scenario that everyone has seen at some point in their lives: A group of children is on a playground with an adult nearby. The children are playing on the slide, the ladders, the swings, etc. They might be playing chase, or some other imaginative game. Everyone is happy and active. The adult is watching from the sidelines ensuring everyone is remaining safe.
Now, imagine this scenario with an adult that is actively engaged with those same children on the same playground. She can take the opportunity to discuss so many learning concepts. Here are a few examples:
? Having the children touch the metal of the equipment to discuss its temperature (cold vs. hot/ warm). A follow-up discussion could occur in the afternoon to discuss how the metal railings were cold that morning and warm in the afternoon after the sun had been shining all day.
? Assisting the children in sliding different objects down the slide and discussing why some items slide quickly (balls) and others are slower (clothing, such as jackets).
? A wealth of observations and discussions on the weather- windy, sunny, cloudy, snowy, cool, etc. and what causes the weather to be this way. For example, it?s a cool day because the clouds have covered the sun. A completely different conversation could occur every day, depending upon the weather.
? If children are playing an imaginative game where they are pirates trying to save their ship from the ?bad guys?, she can ask questions regarding their strategies, offer other ideas, have the children work with each other to talk to the ?bad guys? letting them know it?s not nice to take what doesn?t belong to them.
In one hour of ?playing? on the playground, the children just learned about weather and temperatures, gravity, and conflict resolution. Now, that sounds like a fun day with a fun adult!

The value of college endowments, which had rebounded following the recession, declined slightly despite a recovering stock market. This finding comes from the newly released 2012 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments, produced by the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
It turns out that 2012 was a sub-par year for the performance of college endowments. According to the study, the endowments of the 831 institutions surveyed had an average decline of 0.3 percent in the year ending June 30, 2012. This is down sharply from the previous year's average gain of 19.2 percent and well below 2010's gain of 11.9 percent, but better than the 18.7 percent decline for endowments that occurred during the recession in 2009.
In terms of the methodology used to calculate the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings, the absolute size and annual performance of a college's endowment are not direct factors in the rankings.
However, this is not the full story. A decline in a college's endowment can have a negative impact on the school's ability to fund its yearly operating budget, since institutions use income from their endowment to supplement tuition from students and other sources as a way to fund ongoing operations. Schools in the study spent an average of 4.2 percent of their endowments on their yearly operating budgets in 2012.
One of the factors in the Best Colleges methodology is financial resources per student, which has a weight of 10 percent in the overall rankings. This factor measures the average spending per student on instruction, student services, academic support, research, and related educational expenditures.
U.S. News believes that generous per-student spending indicates that the college can offer a wide variety of academic programs and services. Colleges with large endowments, which tend to be private universities, can spend more per student on educational services than schools without endowments or with very small ones. So if a school's endowment shrinks, it may have less money to spend on the education of its students.
Schools with large endowments therefore tend to do better in the rankings' financial resources indicator than schools without any endowment or very small ones.
Many public universities, which in general don't have large endowments, face tight or decreasing state appropriations due to the lingering impact that the recession and slow recovery has had on the willingness of some states to fund higher education. That can have a bigger impact on public universities than shrinking or slow growing endowments have had on private colleges.
As a result, some public universities have implemented significant tuition increases or have increased the proportion of out-of-state students who pay higher tuitions to try to offset annual funding cuts. Budget cuts in some cases have led to the discontinuance of academic programs, larger class sizes, and reduced spending per student.
Download the list of the universities with the largest college endowments and changes to their market value between 2011 and 2012, available through the organization's website.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Republican and Democratic senators grilled the governor's director of economic development on Wednesday, questioning how many jobs have actually been created by two incentive funds and whether they are adequately monitored.
Gov. Rick Perry's office administers the Texas Enterprise Fund, designed to attract businesses to Texas, and the Emerging Technology Fund, which invests in innovative companies. Aaron Demerson, the director who oversees the funds, said they help create jobs in Texas and spur technological development.
But Sen. Bob Deuell, the Republican chairman of the Senate Economic Committee, started a hearing at the Capitol by acknowledging that the funds have many critics that call them corporate welfare or a slush fund for Perry to reward campaign donors.
"There are people from the far right that don't like this kind of thing, there are people from the far left that don't like it and people in between," the Greenville lawmaker said. "The criticism you get is that these are phantom job reports ... and that these jobs are not really created."
Deuell noted that another incentive program to fight cancer had been badly mismanaged and is now the subject of a criminal investigation.
Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth expressed concern that after 10 years, the Texas Enterprise Fund has never undergone an independent audit. Davis said she supported government efforts to encourage economic development, but said such program require close scrutiny.
While the enterprise fund is forecast to create 66,000 jobs, when Davis pressed Demerson on how many new jobs actually exist because of the program, he could not answer. Davis also questioned whether $2 million in returns on $184 million in taxpayer funds in the Emerging Technology Fund was sufficient.
At several points in the hearing when asked probing questions, Demerson said he did not have the answers and promised to reply later in writing.
Under questioning from Deuell, Demerson acknowledged that as many as 12 companies funded by the Emerging Technology Fund were under review or subject to litigation. He said many of the companies receiving enterprise fund money have not created the number of jobs originally promised and as a result his office has revised those contracts to set lower targets.
"Our goal is to really work with the companies. We want a win-win situation, but there are state dollars and an obligation there," he said. "We're not drawing a line in the sand and saying one or the other, we want to work through that and if there is a win situation that protects the taxpayer dollars, we're going to do it that way."
He said his office has never canceled an enterprise fund contract, though some recipients have chosen to repay $22 million rather than continue in the program.
Sen. Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury, expressed skepticism about the funds because they use taxpayer dollars to finance private companies. He asked for more rigorous study to see if the funds are accomplishing their goals.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) ? At this rate, no one will want to be No. 1.
Indiana became the fifth straight top-ranked men's college basketball team to lose, falling to unranked Illinois 74-72 on a buzzer-beater by Tyler Griffey on Thursday night.
The senior forward took an inbounds pass with 0.9 seconds to play and made a wide-open layup. And, just like that, the Hoosiers ? who moved into the top spot by beating then-No. 1 Michigan just a few days ago ? went down.
Indiana coach Tom Crean, whose team has been No. 1 for a total of seven weeks this season after opening there, doesn't know why the top spot is suddenly so hard to hang on to.
"I can't answer that. I'm not sure," Crean said. "I just know that these games are 40-minute games. We played at a high level for most of the game."
The Hoosiers (20-3, 8-2 Big Ten) were in charge until the final 3 1/2 minutes when the Illini (16-8, 3-7 Big Ten) finally put together a run to take and then retake the lead.
"I know this: When we turn the ball over, we're not very good," Crean said. "And the biggest difference tonight was 28 points off turnovers to our 16."
Hoosiers guard Jordan Hulls said flatly that the top rank had nothing to do with Thursday's loss, even for a team that some worried might be looking past unranked, slumping Illinois to a meeting Sunday with No. 10 Ohio State.
"We just didn't execute when we needed to," he said.
If Indiana falls from No. 1 on Monday, No. 2 Florida might not be a candidate to replace the Hoosiers after the Gators' loss this week to Arkansas. That could put No. 3 Michigan back on top if they can make it to Monday without a loss.
For the Hoosiers, nothing could have been worse than the way Thursday's game ended.
With 0.9 seconds, Griffey left defenders Cody Zeller and Christian Watford behind on an inbounds play from the baseline, took the pass from Brandon Paul and delivered the uncontested buzzer-beater.
The shot sent hundreds of students onto the court, though they waited as officials checked the replay to make sure the clock hadn't beaten Griffey. Once the basket was upheld, Paul and fellow guard D.J. Richardson hugged and teared up in relief.
Illinois had endured an awful run since starting 12-0. The Illini had since lost eight of 11 and fallen to 10th in the 12-team Big Ten.
Griffey, who had struggled as bad as any Illini player, seemed surprised at how easily the winning shot came.
"I just made a simple curl cut and left two guys behind me, and Brandon got off a heck of a pass," he said. "Zeller and Watford were both right in front of me and just kind of stayed there."
Crean said the play was a lot like the other breakdowns in the Hoosiers' game that let Illinois climb back from a 12-point halftime deficit.
"We didn't communicate," he said.
Indiana's loss drops them into a three-way tie for first in the Big Ten with Michigan and Michigan State. The win moves the Illini up into a ninth-place tie with Iowa but, more importantly, provides a potential lifeline ahead of a meeting Sunday at No. 18 Minnesota.
"It was good to get back to having that toughness and togetherness and trust that we needed," Illinois coach John Groce said.
Illinois also added a plank to what may be one of the oddest resumes of any team in the country trying to make the NCAA tournament. Illinois has lost to Purdue, Northwestern and twice to Wisconsin. But coming into Thursday night, the Illini had already beaten three teams now in the top 15: No. 6 Gonzaga, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 14 Butler.
Before Thursday, Illinois hadn't beaten a No. 1 team since a win over Wake Forest in 2004.
Richardson had 23 points for Illinois, Paul had 21 and Griffey finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Zeller led Indiana with 14 points, while Will Sheehey had 13, Watford 12 and Hulls 11.
Indiana shot 50 percent from the field (25 of 50), 52.9 percent from 3-point range (9 of 17) and 93 percent from the free throw line (13 of 14). The Hoosiers led by an eight- to 10-point margin for most of the second half.
When 6-foot-11 Nnanna Egwu fouled out with just under 5 minutes to play, Indiana appeared in control. Watford made both free throws and, at 69-59, the Illini looked done.
But Richardson went on a one-man run, first burying back-to-back 3-pointers and then hitting a midrange jumper on the run to tie it at 70 with 1:17 to play.
With the clock under 30 seconds and the game tied at 72, Indiana had the ball for what would have been a last shot but Victor Oladipo coughed up the ball. Richardson picked it up and tried a breakaway layup that Oladipo just swatted out of bounds to set up the final play.
Groce credited Richardson for providing a spark.
"I thought he was absolutely terrific on both ends of the floor," Groce said. "He battled, he fought."
Griffey was benched several weeks ago after a blowout loss at Wisconsin. On a team that had lost its shooting touch, the senior forward had especially struggled. And, though one of Illinois' bigger players at 6-9, he wasn't adding much to the inside presence the Illini desperately needed.
Groce said that, even after he benched Griffey, he never gave up on him.
"I just have told him numerous times here I believe in him," the first-year Illinois coach said. "I do."
We learned earlier this week that Alex Rodriguez needs left hip surgery to repair a torn labrum and bone impingement. Now we have a rough idea of when the surgery will take place.
According to the Associated Press, Rodriguez said this morning that he will have the surgery in ?mid-January.? A-Rod made the comment at a breakfast he hosted for about 150 high school players who are competing in his annual Miami tournament. The question was actually asked by one of the players. The reason for the delay is that Rodriguez is trying to build up strength in the area prior to going under the knife.
It?s expected that Rodriguez will need 4-6 months of recovery time following surgery, so he could be out until at least June. And given that he?s 37 years old, it?s possible the rehab process could take longer. The Yankees have reportedly made a one-year, $12 million offer to free agent Kevin Youkilis in their efforts to land a stopgap option for third base.
Rodriguez is owed $114 million over the next five seasons, including $28 million for 2013.
