Baseball's opening day sees a return to winter temperatures for much of US

The eastern two-thirds of the mainland United States were set for more winter weather on Monday with a cold front set to bring temperatures of up to 20 degrees below normal, forecasters said.

The weather warmed up over the weekend but the arrival of April was set to see temperatures plunge once again, according to the National Weather Service. It warned there was ?a slight risk of severe thunderstorms? in parts of the Texas Panhandle.

Baseball fans heading to several opening-day games were advised to dress for the conditions.

Weather.com also warned there was a chance of thunderstorms in Florida and parts of the Gulf Coast, and a chance of severe storms in southern Georgia.

The National Weather Service said it would feel like winter for much of the country.

?The brief warm-up that brought temperatures to near normal for parts of the central and eastern U.S. over the weekend will quickly come to an end,? the National Weather Service said on its website.

?A strong cold front will bring much colder temperatures to the northern U.S. by Monday and to the eastern U.S. by Tuesday,? it said.

?Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below normal, and will be reminiscent of winter for the eastern two thirds of the country,? it added.

Weather.com?s temperature map showed much of the country turning blue into Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to be as low as 2 degrees in Minnesota, 22 in northern New England, 29 in Kansas, and 34 in Tennessee.

Chris Dolce, of weather.com, joked that ?you would think we were playing a cruel April Fools' Day joke as we look at the forecast to start out the upcoming work week.?

"A cold front is starting to usher in yet another blast of late-season arctic air that will charge into the central and eastern states ? of course, this only piles on to the misery of what has been a frustrating cold March east of the Rockies,? he said.

He said that fans heading to opening-day Major League Baseball games would need to bundle up in Minneapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

Research could improve heat dissipation in 3-D systems

Apr. 2, 2013 ? Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have won a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract to develop three-dimensional chip cooling technology able to handle heat loads as much as ten times greater than systems commonly used today.

In addition to higher overall chip heat dissipation demands, the new approach will also have to handle on-chip hot spots that dissipate considerably more power per unit area than the remainder of the device. Such cooling demands may be needed for future generations of high-performance integrated circuits embedded in a wide range of military equipment.

"There is really no good way to address this heat dissipation need with existing technology, and the problem is getting worse because computing power is increasing and the capabilities being put on chips are expanding," said Yogendra Joshi, a professor in Georgia Tech's Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the project's principal investigator. "There is a real need for developing schemes that can address high power on the whole chip coupled with very high power dissipation areas that are only a few millimeters square."

DARPA's Microsystems Technology Office, which provided the three-year $2.9 million contract, is seeking techniques to dissipate heat of as much as one kilowatt per square centimeter in the overall integrated circuit, and five kilowatts per square centimeter on smaller areas. The research is part of DARPA's Intrachip/Interchip Enhanced Cooling (ICECool) program.

"The approaches that we are talking about are relatively high-risk," said Joshi, who specializes in electronic cooling from the chip-level on up to full-sized data centers. "They have not been tried before, so there are real questions of reliability -- whether they can hold up under repeated cycles of being powered up and powered down."

In addition to Joshi, the research team includes:

  • Muhannad Bakir, an associate professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who specializes in three-dimensional interconnected systems;
  • Andrei Fedorov, a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Mechanical Engineering, who specializes in understanding and utilizing unique physical properties at the nanoscale, and
  • Suresh Sitaraman, also a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Mechanical Engineering, who specializes in evaluating electronic device reliability through innovative characterization techniques and physics-based modeling.

While applications for the high-powered chips aren't specified, their installation in systems intended for field use will add to the level of challenge.

"For speed and performance issues, this computing power may be embedded where it is needed in the field," Joshi said. "The challenges of cooling these high performance integrated circuits will be even more challenging because they will operate in environments that may be adverse compared to an office or computer room situation."

Among the significant challenges ahead are:

  • Implementing non-uniform cooling using liquid evaporation in three dimensional integrated circuits. The program calls for two dies to be cooled together, but the approaches developed for that could be used in multiple stacked dies. Being able to cool smaller areas with higher heat dissipation needs will provide an additional challenge.
  • Meeting reliability standards while ensuring that the coolant and vaporization within tiny microfluidic passages does not induce liquid dry-out, passage cracking, fluid leakage or undesirable electronic performance.
  • Fabricating micron-scale cooling structures smaller than the thickness of a hair in the integrated circuit stack and understanding the flow and heat transfer physics taking place at that scale.

"It is well known that cooling constraints play a critical role in designing electronic systems," said Bakir. "Often a favorable electronic system configuration may not be realizable due to lack of adequate cooling. The novel microscale thermal technologies that will result from this project will address the most demanding thermal needs of future heterogeneous 3-D nanoelectronic systems and will enable new levels of performance and energy efficiency."

Beyond the technology challenges, the researchers will also need to develop a detailed and fundamental understanding of how liquids boil at the micron size scale.

"The physics of how liquids boil has been well studied for large systems such as power plant boilers," Joshi noted. "What we are talking about here is boiling that will take place in passages that are produced by microfabrication techniques that may be only 50 micrometers by 50 micrometers. The physics of what will be going on there is very different than what happens at the large scale, and how these liquids boil in the passages of interest will result in new scientific insights."

Selecting an appropriate coolant able to provide the necessary phase change performance -- while not damaging the silicon chips -- will be part of the project. In an earlier research program supported by the Office of Naval Research, Georgia Tech developed new coolant candidates that will be considered along with traditional dielectric fluids.

The research will be done in collaboration with industry partner Rockwell-Collins, a major manufacturer of electronic systems for the military. That collaboration will help ensure that solutions developed will be compatible with defense system requirements.

"The challenges for material characterization and physics-based modeling are to consider the larger features of the electronic system without overlooking the micrometer and sub-micrometer scale features that are the main locations for fracture and failure," said Sitaraman. "Mechanical characterization and physics-based modeling will be important to understanding the reliability of microelectronic systems operating with fluid passages."

Beyond meeting the project requirements, the research will produce technology advances that should be broadly useful for future microsystems.

"The technologies we have proposed aim to explore uncharted territory in multiple science and technology domains to bring about an order-of-magnitude improvement in the current state-of-the-art," said Fedorov. "The project represents a significant challenge on the most fundamental level of materials and fluid behavior down to the sub-micron scale. We're confident that this project will produce some really new technologies to address the needs of future 3-D microsystems."

Carbon monoxide killed 'Buckwild' star, 2 others

Updated April 2, 3:35 p.m. ET: Shain Gandee, a star on MTV's "Buckwild" reality show, and two others in a truck he was riding in died of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Kanawha County (W.Va.) Sheriff?s Office told TODAY.com on Tuesday.

Gandee, 21, his uncle David Gandee, 48, and friend Donald Myers, 27, were found in a 1984 Ford Bronco that was?partially submerged in deep mud with the exhaust pipe completely covered, according to a report from NBC affiliate WSAZ. Shain Gandee was in the driver's seat, according to a sheriff's press release.

The group had been reported missing on Sunday, and according to?the sheriff's office, were said to have been last seen at a Sissonville, W.Va., bar around 3 a.m., before they planned to go four-wheeling.

MTV suspended production of "Buckwild" in the wake of the death of Gandee. Last month, the network renewed the show for a second season. In a statement to TODAY.com on Monday, MTV said, "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."

Shain, along with "Buckwild" co-star Shae Bradley, appeared on TODAY in January to defend their then-new show from critics who feared their on-screen antics would reinforce negative stereotypes about West Virginians.

Shain's defense of the show now strikes a sad tone. "You only live once, so live it up," he said.

According to Shain's father, the young reality TV star did just that.

"I spoke with Shain?s father, who is devastated as you can imagine,? show producer J.P. Williams told The Hollywood Reporter. "But he said something that I thought was pretty profound, which is that his son died doing what he loved to do."

Sen. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, who in December called the show a "travesty," expressed his condolences over Shain's death Monday. In a statement to TODAY.com, he said, "My family and I join all West Virginians in praying for the Gandee family as they go through this difficult time."

March homicides drop dramatically in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) ? Almost exactly a year after Chicago's surging homicide rate caught the nation's attention, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy rolled out statistics Monday that showed a dramatic drop in the number of killings. At the same time, they tried to allay safety concerns in the wake of a weekend fight involving more than a dozen young people on the Magnificent Mile.

Emanuel and McCarthy ? appearing together at a news conference and then in separate interviews with The Associated Press ? suggested that an array of police initiatives have helped reduce the number of homicides from 120 for the first three months of 2012 to 70 for the first three months of this year.

"This is a good sign," Emanuel said in a telephone interview, pointing to statistics that show this first quarter tied the same time period of 2009 for the fewest homicides in more than a half-century. "We are clearly having an impact on the homicides."

McCarthy agreed, saying statistics that show a 28 percent drop in the number of homicides in the past six months is more encouraging.

"I feel good about the direction we are going in," he said. "The fact that now we've got a 6-month trend, that's significant."

It is also welcome news for a city that has been mired in gang violence and witness to a number of recent high-profile slayings, including a 15-year-honor student who was gunned down about a mile from President Barack Obama's South Side home in January and a 6-month-old girl who was shot to death last month.

Emanuel and McCarthy also fielded questions about weekend troubles in downtown Chicago, when a group of young women attacked another woman on a train and several young people ? in full view of shoppers and tourists ? jostled passers-by and fought each other on Michigan Avenue. More than two-dozen young people were arrested.

Emanuel said police have increased their presence there, particularly at night and on the weekends, and that he did not believe what happened over the weekend would affect tourism.

"We have a big (police) presence on Michigan Avenue and the moment something happened the police were on it and people got arrested," the mayor told the AP.

Emanuel also voiced his continued support for a police initiative, launched in February after the deadliest January in more than a decade, that has put hundreds of officers, working overtime, on the streets.

In the month it started, there were 14 homicides, the lowest monthly total since 12 in January 1957. March's total was 16, less than a third of the 52 homicides committed in March 2012.

"This is my priority" the mayor said of what is called strategic overtime, which costs the city millions of dollars every month. "It's a priority for the city ... and we are going to make sure we have the resources to achieve the objective."

Man fatally shot outside northeast Ohio church

ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) ? Police in northeast Ohio are investigating a shooting outside a church that left one man dead after an Easter service.

A member of the Hiawatha Church of God in Christ said the man was shot soon after Easter services ended, around 1:15 p.m. Sunday. Joan Crockett said the man knew the shooter, and that a suspect was taken into custody.

Media reports identified the victim as Richard Riddle, 52, and said his son was the shooter.

Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell told the Star Beacon in Ashtabula that dispatchers received multiple calls about the shooting from inside the church and that a mass shooting was feared. He said at least six other law enforcement agencies rushed to assist local police.

The Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland reported that the church's pastor said congregants were leaving when they heard a gunshot.

"People pushed me into a back office and said, 'Somebody's here with a gun,'" said the Rev. David Howard Jr. "The guy was outside hollering and acting crazy."

There were no immediate reports of any other injuries.

Howard said the church has about 175 members. He said people at the church didn't know what led up to the shooting.

"It's such a tragic loss," Crockett said.

County Coroner Pamela Lancaster told the Star Beacon that Riddle's wound was "immediately fatal." She said the body will be transferred to the Cuyahoga County coroner's office for autopsy.

(AP) ? Apple's ring-shaped, gleaming "Spaceship Headquarters" will include a world class auditorium and an orchard for engineers to wander. Google's new Bay View campus will feature walkways angled to force accidental encounters. Facebook, while putting final touches on a Disney-inspired campus including a Main Street with a B-B-Q shack, sushi house and bike shop, is already planning an even larger, more exciting new campus.

More than ever before, Silicon Valley firms want their workers at work.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has gone so far as to ban working from home, and many more offer prodigious incentives for coming in to the office, such as free meals, massages and gyms.

This spring, as the tech industry is soaring out of the Great Recession, plans are in the works for a flurry of massive, perk-laden headquarters.

"We're seeing the mature technology companies trying to energize their work environments, getting rid of cube farms and investing in facilities to compete for talent," said Kevin Schaeffer, a principal at architecture and design firm Gensler in San Jose. "That's caused a huge transition in the way offices are laid out."

New Silicon Valley headquarters or expansions are under way at most of the area's major firms, including eBay, Intel, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Netflix, Nvidia and Oracle. Many will be huge: Apple Corp.'s 176-acre campus will be one of the world's largest workplaces. On the outside, many of the new buildings boast striking architectural designs and will collectively be among the most environmentally friendly in the country. Inside, there are walls you can draw on, ping pong tables, Lego stations, gaming arcades and free haircuts.

Critics say that while some workplace perks and benefits are a good thing, the large, multibillion dollar corporate headquarters are colossal wastes of money that snub the pioneering technology these firms actually create.

"Companies led by older management tend to be very controlling, but when I look at people in the 20s or 30s, they're totally capable of working on their own and being productive," said Kevin Wheeler, whose Future of Talent Institute researches and consults on human resources for Silicon Valley businesses. "To have artificial structures that require everybody to be in the office at certain hours of the day is simply asinine."

Wheeler said he thinks Yahoo called everyone back to work "because they had gotten into a culture of laziness," and that the firm will likely loosen the restrictions soon.

Yahoo was, in fact, an early model of Silicon Valley's happy workplace culture, touting their espresso bar and inspirational speakers as a method of inspiring passion and originality. Today yoga, cardio-kickboxing and golf classes at the office, as well as discounts to ski resorts and theme parks, help it receive top ratings as one of America's happiest workplaces.

Companies say extraordinary campuses are necessary to recruit and retain top talent and to spark innovation and creativity.

And there are business benefits and financial results for companies that keep their workers happy. The publicly traded 100 Best Companies To Work For in America consistently outperform major stock indices and have more qualified job applicants and higher productivity, according to the San Francisco-based Great Place to Work Institute. That may not always be obvious, however.

"People do work really, really hard here," Facebook spokesman Slater Tow said as an engineer glided past a row of second floor conference rooms on a skateboard. "They have to be passionate about what they do. If they're not, we would rather someone who is."

He points out the Jumbotron frame for outdoor movies, the Nacho Royale taqueria, a bank branch with tellers standing by, an artist in residence. Traditional benefits are part of the Silicon Valley packages as well. Facebook offers free train passes, a shuttle to work, a month of paid vacation, full health care and stock options.

Facebook staffers are welcome to stop by and play in Ben Barry's Analog Research Laboratory, a large, sunlit studio with laser cutters, woodworking tools, a letter press machine and silk screening supplies.

"I believe if people feel they can control their environment, that leads to a greater sense of ownership over the product," says Barry, who makes posters for the campus walls with mantras like "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" and "Move fast and break things."

About six miles north at Google's headquarters, workers on one of more than 1,000 Google-designed bikes rolled from one building to another. Others stepped into electric cars, available for free check outs if someone has an errand. In one office, two young engineers enjoyed a beer and shot pool.

Google doesn't want its Googlers to have to worry about distractions in their life.

Concerned about the kids? Childcare is on campus. Need to shop and cook? Have the family dine at Google. Dirty laundry piling up? Bring it in to the office. Bring Fido too, so he doesn't get lonely. There's a climbing wall, nap pods (lay down in the capsule, set the alarm, zzzzz), a bowling alley, multiple gyms, a variety of healthy cafes, mini kitchens, and classes on anything from American Sign Language to Public Speaking. In a shared, community garden, Googlers plant seeds, knowing that if they get too busy, a landscaper will pull their weeds.

The company has no policy requiring people to be at work. But officials say Googlers want to come in.

"We work hard to create the healthiest, happiest and most productive work environments possible that inspire collaboration and innovation," said spokeswoman Katelin Todhunter-Gerberg.

Wheeler says the mega-complexes being built today will be hard to staff 10 years from now, and that the next era will see smaller workplaces where employees are responsible for meeting achievements and objectives, and have flexibility about when they come in to their office.

"When you look at how some of these companies operate, they're in effect, sweat shops. ... They want 80, 90, 100 hours of work. In order to even make that tolerable, of course you have to offer haircuts and food and places to sleep or else people would have to go home," he said.
