Minnesota Hockey Player Battles Cancer With Poise ? CBS Minnesota

EDINA (WCCO) ? An accomplished Minnesota hockey player is fighting his latest battle without a stick and skates.

While running the Twin Cities Marathon, Chace Johnson remembers shooting pains through his stomach, and he even had to walk a bit before finishing. A couple days later, doctors detected a tumor, and told him he had colon cancer.

?Being a 25 years old, I definitely did not expect to have cancer. That?s for sure,? he said.

He had surgery following that diagnosis.

During his treatment, he received support from family and friends, and Edina?s High School hockey team, too.

?For a lot of these guys, this was their idol growing up, and they wanted really to help out and give to a good cause,? said Athletic Director John Soma. ?All the hockey players are really good about supporting different groups, and this is really hitting close to home, because it?s part of their family.?

At the Hornets? home, on the same ice that Chace used to play on when he was on the team, there?s going to be a Chuck-a-Puck fundraiser coming up this Saturday night. The money raised is going to help Chace and his family pay for substantial and mounting medical bills.

?You know, times are tough some times and having people on the way support you is very nice,? Johnson said. ?They wanted to reach out to me, help me any way they could, and they thought to have a fundraiser, and it?s just very, very nice, and it?s great to be part of that.?

Johnson will also drop the puck that night.

He faces six months of chemotherapy, and is slowly returning to running and hockey.

?I?m trying to keep life as normal as I can,? he said.

His fundraiser will happen at the Braemar Arena in Edina. Each puck will cost $5, and the winner will receive four Club Level seats with a parking pass to the February 26th game between the Wild and the visiting San Jose Sharks.

Contributions on Chace?s behalf can also be made to the ?Chase Johnson Benefit Trust? at the Wells Fargo branch, 5116 Vernon Avenue South, Edina, Minn., 55436. Please include the last four digits of the account (5586) with your gift.

In 2000, he shot several goals to help his team win the PeeWee A State Tournament, and now he?s fighting for another victory in his battle to beat cancer.

Sony Tablet S update lets you play with PS3 controllers, cable adapter required

We've got some good news for gamers that were willing to plunge into the PlayStation-certified world of Sony's tablets. The latest update to the company's divisive Tablet S will let you connect your PS3 controllers with those 32-bit games of yesteryear. The update is available now in Sony's homeland of Japan and the company is also rewarding its tablet faithful with a free download; an Ape Escape-themed mini-game collection. It's not all good news, however. The clamshelled Tablet P doesn't get the controller hook-up and you'll need to buy an additional USB adapter cable to connect a controller to the monoscreened Tablet S. A briefly worded, vaguely translated release awaits after the break.

Update: We've heard from Japanese users that you'll only need to the cable to initially pair the controller with the tablet. After that, you're free to wirelessly play away.

France gets four bids in 4G auction (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France's telecoms regulator has received bids from all of the country's major operators for a second batch of higher-quality fourth-generation mobile licenses and will choose winners in the coming weeks.

ARCEP said in a statement on Thursday that France Telecom, SFR, Bouygues and Iliad had submitted offers but did not disclose how much each company had bid.

The French government aims to raise at least 1.8 billion euros ($2.33 billion) in the second phase of the auction, which offers "golden frequencies" in the 800 MHz band, so dubbed because they allow mobile signals to travel long distances without losing strength.

France has already sold off a batch of frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band for 936 million euros, representing a premium to what similar frequencies sold for in some neighboring European countries.

In the first round, France Telecom and soon-to-be new mobile player Iliad won two larger blocks of 20 megahertz, while SFR and Bouygues got 15 MHz each.

Analysts predicted that SFR, the country's second-biggest mobile operator, would bid aggressively in the second round since it had not received as much spectrum as it wanted in the first.

As a result, the French government may end up raising more than the 2.5 billion-euro minimum it set for the 4G licenses, a boon that would be welcomed in a time of tight national budgets.

The results of the auction will shape the competitive landscape in France's telecom market for years to come. The amount of spectrum an operator has determines the quality of service it can offer customers surfing the web from smartphones or tablets, a lucrative and fast-growing market.

With Iliad set to launch its mobile service in the coming days or weeks, France's telecoms market has been in a phase of intensifying competition and declining prices in the past year, and analysts expect that dynamic to continue.

Iliad's approach to the second round of the auction - whether it bids aggressively for the best frequencies or not - is likely to be interpreted as a sign of its ambitions in the mobile market.

Already Iliad, which markets its offers under the Free brand name, surprised in the first round by winning one of the bigger blocks over larger rival SFR.

Similar 4G auctions have been carried out in Spain, Germany, and Italy, while the UK has delayed its auction until next year.

Study confirms many of us go online for no reason

(AP) ? For anyone who needed official word, a new study confirms that many of us ? and the majority of young adults ? go online for no good reason at all.

The report from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that on any given day, 53 percent of 18 to 29 year-olds go online just to have fun or pass time.

That should explain all those kitten videos.

The report finds that the amount of time people spend tooling around on the Web doing nothing corresponds with age. Only 12 percent of people over 65 say they went online the previous day for no particular reason. Of those aged 50 to 64, the study found 27 percent answered yes to the same question.

In all, 58 percent of all adults said that they use the Internet to pass time or have fun at least occasionally. Of adults who use the Internet, nearly three-quarters surf the Web for no reason.

The survey didn't define "fun," so people could interpret it broadly. For some people, gossip blogs might be fun, for others, they're serious research.

Pew is releasing the study on Friday. The phone survey was conducted from July 25 to Aug. 26 among 2,260 American adults.

Two biggest black holes ever found

Two huge black holes may be the largest yet measured. Supermassive black holes inhabit most large galaxies. One, in the galaxy Messier 87, has the mass of about 6 billion suns ? but it is no longer the record holder.

There's one in galaxy NGC 3842 with the mass of about 10 billion suns, and NGC 4889's could weigh up to 37 billion suns, say Nicholas McConnell at the University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues.

The estimates were made by clocking the motion of stars near these galaxies' cores, since a black hole's mass dictates how fast objects orbit around them.

In 2008, a mass of 18 billion suns was claimed for the black hole inside a distant bright galaxy called OJ287. But that number relies on an assumption ? that periodic flares from OJ287 are created by a second black hole orbiting the first. "Observations cannot rule out alternative ways of creating those outbursts," says McConnell.

The mass of galaxies tends to correlate with that of their central black holes, but both of these holes are heavier than predicted. Collisions with other galaxies could have force-fed the holes with gas, the team speculates. "Another possibility is that the black holes we discovered grew to huge masses early on, and their host galaxies never caught up," says McConnell.
