(AP) ? One playoff victory was good enough for Mike Woodson to return as New York Knicks coach ? even with Phil Jackson lurking as a potential candidate.

Woodson knows more will be asked of him now.

"I know expectations are high and they should be high," Woodson said during a conference call, "and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

The Knicks removed the interim tag Friday and announced they had given Woodson a multiyear contract extension, rewarding him for a terrific finish to what had been a turbulent season.

Woodson led the Knicks to an 18-6 record after replacing Mike D'Antoni on March 14. The Knicks lost 4-1 to Miami in the first round, snapping an NBA-record, 13-game postseason losing streak by winning Game 4 for their first victory since 2001.

Still, there was speculation that Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan would open one of the league's biggest check books to go after Jackson, the 11-time champion coach and former Knicks player who sat out last season after retiring from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yet the Knicks never looked anywhere beyond Woodson, believing they can continue to improve with a full season of his coaching.

"I think Woody earned the right to be the first person we talked to and turned out to be the only person we talked to because our discussions with him after the season really reflected why he was so successful during the season," general manager Glen Grunwald said.

"We thought he was the right guy for this team at this time. Obviously, there's some great coaches out there that had we opened up the search would have been called, mainly Phil Jackson, who's the most successful coach in the NBA history, but we felt Woody was our guy and he showed it during the season and our discussions after the season."

Woodson shrugged off the Jackson speculation.

"Tremendous coach, I know his name's been mentioned a lot, but that was not my concern," Woodson said. "My concern at the time was coaching the New York Knicks the period that I had to coach and Mr. Dolan decided to bring me back."

Neither the Knicks nor Woodson would disclose the terms of the deal.

A first-round draft pick of the Knicks in 1980, Woodson returned to the team last summer as an assistant coach, providing a defensive-minded voice to D'Antoni's staff. Woodson's influence, combined with Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler, moved the Knicks into the top half of the league's defensive rankings after they had been one the worst teams for years.

D'Antoni resigned March 14 when the Knicks were 18-24 and in danger of missing the playoffs. Woodson won his first five games and was praised by players for holding them more accountable to playing defense. Most importantly, he got the most out of Carmelo Anthony, who was having a disappointing season in D'Antoni's offense but was April's Eastern Conference player of the month.

"Mike took over the team under challenging circumstances and made it clear, starting on day one, that he was going to hold every player on our roster accountable," Dolan said in a statement. "We saw a significant improvement since Mike took over and believe our team will only keep improving under Mike's direction."

Woodson denied recent reports that he had replaced agent Joe Glass under pressure from Dolan to avoid having to work again with former coach Larry Brown's representation. Woodson confirmed he switched to CAA, but said it was his choice, and that agent Terry Prince had worked on his contract.

Anthony, Chandler and fellow star Amare Stoudemire had all backed Woodson's return when the season ended. And his chances of improving returned when the Knicks removed the interim tag from Grunwald, his former college teammate at Indiana, late in the regular season.

Woodson previously spent six seasons as coach of the Atlanta Hawks, improving his win total in every season until they went 53-29 in 2009-10. But he wasn't retained after they were swept in the conference semifinals for the second straight year.

He then sat out a year before interviewing last summer for openings in Detroit ? where he was an assistant on the Pistons' NBA championship team in 2004 ? Minnesota and Houston. He then was hired by the Knicks on Aug. 29.

Woodson has a career 224-292 record as an NBA coach.

Romney, Obama compete for veteran vote, Florida emerging as battleground

The effort to win the votes of military veterans in the presidential election takes the spotlight Memorial Day weekend, with President Obama and Mitt Romney each attending public events and arguing each has a better plan to improve veterans' weak unemployment situation and other issues.

Romney is scheduled to appear Monday with Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain at a Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in San Diego, a conservative region and so-called Navy town.

McCain, a decorated Navy officer and Vietnam prisoner, won the veteran vote over Obama as the Republican nominee in the 2008 election.

The GOP has long been considered the party that supports a strong national defense and holds the vote of veteran and active-duty?members. But the percentages are dropping and the vote appears to be up for grabs this year.

President George W. Bush won the veteran vote by 16 percentage points in his 2004 race against Democrat and Vietnam veteran Sen. John Kerry.

McCain won in 2008 against Obama, though only by 10 percent, 54 percent to 45 percent.

A recent Wall Street Journal-NBC poll shows Romney leads Obama by 8 percentage points among military voters. But a Reuters-Ipsos poll shows Obama winning the veterans' vote over Romney by as much as 7 percentage points.

Large pockets of veterans live in such states as Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. But whether they can assemble a big enough voting bloc to help either candidate win or lose a state remains unclear.

The state most likely for this to happen is Florida, a key election state with 1.6 million veterans, Martin Lee, spokesman for Vets for Romney, said Saturday.

"If we can motivate veterans to go to the polls, with elections so close now, the difference of 100,000 votes could change the election," Lee, a Navy veteran, said.

While jobs and the economy are likely to remain the major topics of the general election, veterans' affairs, including high unemployment, will be a factor, especially since their votes could influence the tight race.

A recent Bureau of Labor Statistic report shows unemployment for U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served on active duty September 2001 was 12.1 percent. The jobless rate for all veterans was 8.3 percent, about the same as the national average, according to the agency's March 20 report.

President Obama has recently seized on the opportunity to win votes from the estimated 22 million veterans, re-launching his Veterans and Military Families for Obama campaign.

"There is nothing I take more serious than my responsibility to those who have risked their own safety to defend ours," the president said in a video he released earlier this month with first lady Michelle Obama. "That's why Michelle and I have made supporting veterans and military families a top priority from the start."

The president also touted the capture of Usama bin Laden under his leadership, the withdraw of troops in Iraq and plans to provide tax credits to businesses that hire veterans.

On Saturday, the president said in his weekly radio address that the county has to serve veterans "as well as they have served us" in part by making sure they get the healthcare and benefits they need.

Obama is scheduled to visit the Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Monday.?

Still, at least one veteran's organization thinks he could do more. The Rolling Thunder group that represents the plight of U.S. war prisoners said members were supposed to talk with the president Friday at the White House, as part of their annual Memorial Day rally in Washington. However, members got little more than a photo op.

"We thought we were going to meet with the president," Nancy Regg, the group spokeswoman told FoxNews.com "We were disappointed."

Former Army Sgt. Artie Muller, ?the group's executive director, recalled how the group rumbled right up to the White House doors to meet with George W. Bush when he was president, then suggested those days appear long gone.

He said Romney turned down a request to meet the group in Washington and that he is not sure who, if either of the candidates, will get the Rolling Thunder endorsement.

"They have plenty of money to fight wars," he said. "But when it's over, to heck with veterans."

Romney had no public appearances on his schedule Saturday, and the president began a round of golf at about 1:30 p.m.

Romney, who has his own Romney for Veterans campaign, has argued since the start of the campaign that his business experience make him a better candidate to help all Americans find a job.

Romney has criticized the president's call for billions in cuts from the defense budget, while accusing him of negotiating with the Taliban. He also slammed him for apologizing in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world.

2 toddlers dead after California trailer fire

Authorities say two toddlers have been killed in a trailer fire in Central California that was accidentally started by two older children playing with matches.

Kern County fire officials say two girls, believed to be about two or three years old, died when the fire consumed the vacant trailer on the edge of Bakersfield around 2 p.m. Friday.

Fire Capt. Tommy Brown says the girls were playing in the trailer with two boys, believed to be four or five years old. The boys were playing with matches when the trailer caught on fire.

Brown says the boys were able to escape the flames, but the two girls were trapped inside as the fire spread through the trailer.

The boys are with family members as the fire is being investigated.

Doctor Note-Taking Style Could Affect Patient Care: Study

The way your doctor takes notes could affect the way he or she cares for you, a new study suggests.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association shows that doctors who take patient notes by dictating them give lower quality of care to their patients, compared with doctors who take notes via "structured documentation."

Structured documentation is when the notes are taken and separated by section (like "family history" or "present illness"). Dictating is defined as reading information over a phone, which is then transcribed to an electronic record.

"Dictating may be easier for the doctor, but patients need to be careful," study researcher Dr. Jeffrey Linder, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said in a statement. "Doctors who dictate may not be paying as close attention to information and alerts in the electronic health record that are important for patient health."

The study included 18,569 visits by 7,000 people. People in the study had diabetes and/or coronary artery disease.

Among the 234 doctors who saw these patients, 9 percent of them dictated their notes, 29 percent of them took notes using structured documentation, and 62 percent typed "free-text" notes (where there's just one window to type down information, a la free note-taking).

Thirty days after the visits, the researchers looked at how the patients were cared for with 15 different measures.

They found that care quality was worse for patients whose doctors dictated the notes, particularly in the areas of documenting patient use of tobacco, diabetic eye exams and antiplatelet medication.

Just last year, a study was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine showing that 90 percent of people want to know what their doctors wrote in their patient charts, TIME reported.

However, the study also showed that more than half of doctors surveyed wouldn't want to make their notes available for patients to view electronically for one year, according to TIME.
