'Dumb And Dumber To' Won't Happen Without Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels Says

'Nobody's doing it without Jim,' Daniels tells MTV News after Carrey's reps announced he left the proposed sequel.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Kara Warner

Jim Carrey's reps confirmed on Wednesday that he has left the proposed "Dumb and Dumber" sequel, the cleverly titled "Dumb and Dumber To," due to a conflict with the studios, New Line and Warner Bros.

Later that day, MTV News spokes with Carrey's co-star from the original, Jeff Daniels, as he walked the red carpet for his upcoming HBO series, Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom."

Daniels' answer was succinct and confirmed what many feared would be the implication of Carrey's departure. "No, nobody's doing it without Jim," he said.

As "Entertainment Tonight" had previously reported, Carrey exited the sequel to the Farrelly Brothers' follow-up to the 1994 comedy because New Line and Warner Bros. did not care enough about the project.

"According to sources, Carrey grew increasingly frustrated by New Line and Warner Brothers, who he felt showed a lack of enthusiasm regarding the project," "ET" claimed.

When the entertainment show reached out to Carrey's representation, they confirmed the departure and delivered a statement from the actor himself. "I would have thought 'Dumb and Dumber To' was a no-brainer," he said. "After all, it's implied in the title."

Daniels' insistence that a sequel would not happen without Carrey's involvement should not come as a surprise. The main draw of "Dumb and Dumber To" was that it would reunite the stars of the beloved movie for the first time.

"Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd," a prequel to the original that featured none of the original's key players, bombed at the box office in 2003.

Do you think a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel can go on without Jim Carrey? Leave your comment below!

Overtly 'girly' scientists alienate potential students

Liz Else, associate editor

It probably sounded like a good idea late at night in a Brussels basement where some desperate folk from the European Union's Research and Innovation promo team were holed up on a mission to "get more girls into science".

Why not create a glitzy website for 13 to 17 year old girls that's right out of a teen magazine? Yes, cried the promo people, and why not add a teaser video of three junior Charlie's Angels complete with killer stilettos and lab coats?

But in the cold light of day, the EU really should have done their homework before launching Science: It's a girl thing!

We believe them when they say they are worried about women being under-represented in science at a time when Europe needs more researchers to foster innovation and bolster its economy.

And of course they're right to argue that young people typically make critical career decisions between the ages of 13 and 17, and that recent analysis of education data shows that at 15, girls and boys have similar preferences for and attainment in science and technology - but that a large number of girls subsequently drop out. Not to mention all the women who fall away even later after doing their expensive PhDs.

But the team really should have done some background before launching the teaser video for the initiative (above). If they had, they would have probably come across some recent research by University of Michigan psychologists Diana Betz and Denise Sekaquaptewa that would have stopped them dead in their tracks.

Betz and Sekaquaptewa recruited 142 girls aged 11 to 13 and showed them mocked-up magazine articles about three female university students who were either described as doing well in science, engineering, technology or mathematics (STEM), or as rising stars in unspecified fields. The three also either displayed overtly feminine characteristics or gender-neutral traits.

Oddly, the researchers found that girls who read about the feminine science students decreased their self-rated interest in maths ability and short-term expectations of success.

Worse still, girls who already disliked science were especially demotivated by the feminine scientists. Sekaquaptewa says this was probably because they saw simultaneous success in both domains as totally unattainable.

So there you have it. The study suggest that the EU's cringeworthy video will not only generate tonnes of hate tweets but also backfire, demotivating girls who are interested in science and totally alienating those who are not. What a way to spoil a worthy initiative.

US ambassador taps Facebook to drive wedge between Syrian military and Assad

Using social media, US Ambassador Robert Ford warns Syrian military officers they could be prosecuted for crimes against humanity by following?President Bashar al-Assad?s orders.

Robert Ford, the US ambassador to Syria, spent much of his time taking America?s support for Syria?s pro-democracy opposition directly to the streets before he was pulled out of the country in February out of concern for his safety.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Now Ambassador Ford, holed up in Washington and relying on social media to continue getting his message out, is using Facebook to relay a stark warning to Syria?s armed forces: Stop carrying out President Bashar al-Assad?s dirty work for him, or risk finding yourself prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

?The officers and soldiers of the Syrian military have a choice to make,? Ford says in an entry on his Facebook page that he posted Wednesday. ?Do they want to expose themselves to criminal prosecution by supporting the barbaric actions of the Assad regime against the Syrian people??

Ford then cites the case of the former Yugoslavia, noting that 161 people, including prominent and not-so-prominent members of the military, were indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ?for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity against non-combatants and combatants.?

The alternative for members of the Syrian armed forces, Ford says, is to ?help secure the role of the professional military in a democratic Syria by supporting the Syrian people and their transition to an inclusive, tolerant and representative democracy that respects human rights and equal, fair treatment for all components of the Syrian nation.??

The ambassadorial effort to drive a wedge between Mr. Assad and his military henchmen comes as Western powers contemplate another try in the United Nations Security Council for a resolution on Syria. The Security Council is empowered to refer cases to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Ford?s post was also followed, less than 24 hours later, by the defection of a Syrian fighter pilot, who flew his Russian-made MiG-21 to neighboring Jordan and was immediately granted asylum. While it?s unlikely the pilot was acting on Ford?s admonition, he nonetheless illustrated the kind of action the activist ambassador is trying to encourage.

For months, Western leaders have suggested that Assad could suffer the fate of leaders like Serbia?s Slobodan Milosevic and Sudan?s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir. In February, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in Senate testimony that Assad should be considered a war criminal, and that same month the UN?s top human rights official, Navi Pillay, told the UN?s Human Rights Council that Syria should be referred to the ICC for ?the unspeakable violations that take place every moment.?

Mr. Milosevic died in custody in The Hague as he fought war-crimes charges in a long court battle. Mr. Bashir, under ICC indictment for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, remains president of Sudan but is unable to travel widely for fear of arrest.

But other world leaders have also spoken of offering Assad asylum as a way of ending Syria?s violence and paving the way to a political transition. Indeed, the contradictions in the various proposals for handling Syria ? asylum for Assad on the one hand, but now the specter of international prosecution for lower-level military as raised by Ford?s warning, on the other ? has some human rights advocates worried that a let-off-the-rat-but-go-after-the-mice approach could be in the offing.

"The US is hoping to pull a rabbit out of a hat: trying for a managed transition in Syria which includes an implicit Get-out-of-Jail-Free card for Assad and his associates,? says Richard Dicker, director of the international justice program at Human Rights Watch.

The ICC can get involved only if the Security Council refers the Syria case to the court?s prosecutor for investigation, similar to what happened with Libya and Sudan, Mr. Dicker notes. But Russia, a veto-wielding member of the Security Council and Syria?s main defender, is highly unlikely to agree to a referral.

But publicly, administration officials are showing no signs of letting Assad off the hook. At the White House, the spokesman for the National Security Council, Tommy Vietor, hailed the defecting Syrian pilot even as he echoed Ford?s call to the Syrian military to jump their commander?s ship and distance themselves from the regime?s ?horrific actions.?

?We welcome this pilot?s decision to do the right thing,? Mr. Vietor said. ?We have long called on the military and members of the Syrian regime to defect and abandon their positions rather than be complicit in the regime?s atrocities.?

Vacation pledged for bullied bus monitor in viral video

NBC affiliate WHEC talks to bus monitor Karen Klein, who was verbally abused by a group of middle school students on a school bus.

By msnbc.com staff

Karen Klein, a school bus monitor?of Greece, N.Y., depicted being verbally bullied in a video gone viral, may have the last laugh.

By late Wednesday on the fund-raising site indiegogo.com, nearly 1,300 donors had pledged almost?$25,000 in a campaign called??Lets Give Karen ? The bus monitor ? H Klein A Vacation.?

The fund-raising was set up through a reddit.com member, identified as Max Sidorov of Toronto, Canada.

An Indiegogo spokesperson?told msnbc.com that the website was working to make sure Klein would get the money raised through its site.

A?video called "Making the Bus Monitor Cry"?was posted to YouTube?on Monday and had been seen by more than 100,000 viewers by Wednesday evening. The video shows students yelling at Klein and making fun of her weight and other physical conditions.

Graphic content warning: The video on YouTube?

NBC television station WHEC of Rochester, N.Y., on Wednesday confirmed with the Greece School District that Klein was the subject of the middle school students? heckling.

An outpouring of support for Klein emerged after her identity became known.

While WHEC was interviewing Klein, the station reported, people were stopping over and flowers were being delivered.

Klein said she still can?t believe this happened.?The video was taken by a student who is always very kind to her, she said.

?It?s just plain mean, and no one should have to live with that,? she said.

In her 20-plus years as a bus driver and monitor with the Greece Central Schools, Klein said she has never run into this kind of behavior.

See the original story at WHEC.com

?Everything started out as usual. I don?t know what happened,? she said.

Klein said the four kids in the video often misbehave, but what happened Monday was taking things to a whole new level.

Greece police and school district officials are investigating three videos, including the one titled "Making the Bus Monitor Cry."?

Debra Hoeft, Greece School District, said, ?We do not tolerate harassment of staff or students. While we can not comment on specific student discipline, we can say that students found to be involved will face strong disciplinary actions.?

In one of the videos, the kids are calling her names, swearing at her and even making physical threats. Klein doesn?t say much to the middle schoolers.

?I was trying to just ignore,? Klein said. ?I?m hoping they would go away, but it doesn?t work.?

Klein said she didn?t know about the video until Wednesday morning, and watched it for the first time at the police station when she went to help them with their investigation.

Klein told WHEC she plans to return to work but not on a bus carrying those students.
