In a poll conducted by the Open Society, 60 per cent of respondents indicated they do not have confidence in the ability of Bulgarian officials to reduce organized crime and corruption, and questioned the fairness of the judicial system.?
The poll disclosed that 77 per cent of Bulgarians approve of the European Commission's Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, CVM, which monitors corruption in the country, and want it to continue.?
The poll was conducted to coincide with the final report by the Commission on the CVM, which will be published on July 18 and will determine the fate of the mechanism.
The CVM has been in Bulgaria and Romania for five years, and it is expected that both countries will receive a negative report and a recommendation for the mechanism to remain in place.
The Open Society report found that the majority of Bulgarians do not believe significant progress has occurred over the last five years and any positive changes should be accredited to European monitoring.?
