Nord Stream Pipeline has no Negative Effect on Gulf of Finland, Report Says

Nord Stream AG and the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment have presented a report on the results of orbital satellite environmental monitoring of the Russian section of the Nord Stream offshore section for the second quarter of 2012. The findings provide solid proof that the construction of the gas pipeline has no negative impact on the environment.

The monitoring did not detect any significant influence of the pipeline on the condition of the Gulf of Finland and the Portovaya Bay. Neither did the pipeline construction have any effect on the natural habitat of seabirds (of which 18 species are listed as endangered) along the pipeline route.

The experts conducting the investigation were monitoring the situation in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland along the gas pipeline from April 1 to June 30, 2012. According to Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Mr. Nuritdin Inamov, the results of the monitoring activities and the conclusions made by the experts are of particular importance in the context of commissioning the launch of the second line of the gas pipeline.
